Option Alpha vs tastytrade (2026): The Free Pro Deal, What Each One Does, and the Bots That Compare

Option Alpha vs tastytrade: two trading screens with options charts side by side on a desk

Option Alpha and tastytrade are not competitors, which is the first thing to know if you typed one against the other. Option Alpha is a no-code platform that runs options bots inside a brokerage account you already own. tastytrade is one of the brokerages it can run them in. The reason the two get compared is a deal: connect a tastytrade account with at least $5,000 in it and Option Alpha's Pro plan, normally $99 a month on annual billing or $149 month to month, costs $0. This page explains what each one does, what the free deal actually costs once commissions are counted, and how the six other platforms that connect to tastytrade compare, every price checked on November 2, 2026.

One correction up front, because several pages that rank for this search get it wrong: tastytrade did not buy Option Alpha. Option Alpha's own tastytrade promotion page states that the two are "separate and unaffiliated companies." tastytrade's parent since 2021 is IG Group. The relationship is a broker integration with a promotion attached, the same shape as Option Alpha's deals with Tradier and TradeStation.

What Option Alpha is

Option Alpha is options automation without code. You build a bot from decision-tree style rules, or clone one of the community templates, and the bot opens, manages and closes defined-risk options positions on a schedule you set: credit spreads, iron condors, covered calls and the like. The product is the rule engine, the backtester and the scanner; the trading happens in your broker account. Per its pricing page, every plan allows 50 bots with a $100,000 limit per bot and unlimited backtesting. Pro is $99 a month billed annually or $149 month to month and works with any supported broker. The broker plans, tastytrade, Tradier and TradeStation, are $0 a month with a qualifying account, and the page notes that on a broker plan all live trading must go through that broker. The FAQ describes a 30-day free trial, and paper trading works without connecting a brokerage.

The tastytrade integration was announced on November 9, 2023. You authorize it from the Trading Accounts tab in Option Alpha's settings, sign in on tastytrade's page, and any account under that tastytrade login can be connected. Under the hood that is tastytrade's OAuth2 program, the same one every other platform on this page uses, which is why two-factor authentication must be on at tastytrade before any of them can connect; our tastytrade API post covers the mechanics.

What tastytrade is

tastytrade is a FINRA-member brokerage built for active, self-directed traders, with an options-heavy audience. Its pricing: $0 for online stock and ETF trades including fractional shares, $1 per contract to open stock and ETF options capped at $10 per leg and $0 to close, $1 per contract each way on E-mini futures, and 1% each way on crypto (0.75% for bitcoin and ether), plus exchange, clearing and regulatory fees on securities. tastytrade does not sell a strategy bot of its own. What it offers for automation is the Open API, documented at developer.tastytrade.com, and since August 31, 2026 an open-source MCP server that lets an AI assistant such as Claude read an account and submit orders, with every order requiring a separate confirmation from the account owner. Its API terms explicitly allow verified third-party platforms to trade on behalf of enrolled customers, which is why so many bots support it.

So the honest framing of "Option Alpha vs tastytrade" is: do you want Option Alpha's bots at all, and if so, is tastytrade the right account to run them in. The deal makes that second question interesting.

The free Pro deal, priced honestly

The deal: keep a qualifying tastytrade account connected, with a $5,000 minimum balance per the pricing page, and Pro is $0 a month. Against $99 to $149 a month that is $1,188 to $1,788 a year of software you do not pay for. What you pay instead is tastytrade's commission on every options contract the bots open: $1 per contract, capped at $10 per leg, and nothing to close. Three illustrative months:

  • A quiet bot: 10 two-leg credit spreads a month, one contract each, is 20 contracts opened, so $20 in commissions plus exchange and regulatory fees. The software is free; the account costs about $20 a month in commissions.
  • An active book: 60 spreads a month at two contracts a leg is 240 contracts opened, $240 a month. At that pace the commissions exceed what Pro itself would cost, so the deal stops being the reason to pick tastytrade and the broker's execution and fees have to stand on their own.
  • Large legs: the $10 cap per leg means a 25-contract leg costs $10, not $25, so size-heavy bots get cheaper per contract as they scale.

Two things the deal does not change. tastytrade's commissions are the same whether you use Option Alpha or not, so the right comparison is against what you would pay at Tradier or TradeStation under their own Option Alpha deals, and our broker pricing comparison has those numbers side by side. And the plan only covers tastytrade: trading a second broker through Option Alpha means paying for Pro.

The seven platforms that connect to tastytrade, compared

Every one of these connects through tastytrade's official OAuth sign-in, so none of them stores your tastytrade password and all of them can be revoked from your tastytrade profile. What differs is who decides the trades, what they trade, and what they cost.

  • Option Alpha: your rules, options only. Pro $99/mo annual or $149 monthly; $0 with a $5,000 tastytrade account. 30-day trial. Pricing.
  • Whispertrades: your rules, options bots billed per bot per trading day: $1.10 for one bot, sliding to $0.70 at 13 or more, roughly $15 to $23 a month per bot. No free trial. Schwab, tastytrade and Tradier. Pricing.
  • OptionBots: your rules or its AI bot builder, options. Pro $197/mo (15 bots), Scale $297/mo (100 bots), or $0 with a $5,000 (Pro) or $15,000 (Scale) tastytrade balance and a live trade each month. Pricing.
  • TradersPost: routes your TradingView or TrendSpider alerts into orders; it generates no signals. Starter $49, Basic $99, Pro $199, Premium $299 a month; 7-day paper trial. On tastytrade it supports stocks, options, futures and crypto, with bracket exits but no trailing stops, per its tastytrade docs. Pricing.
  • QuantConnect: your code (Python or C#), run on its servers. Supports tastytrade for US equities, options, futures and index options; one tastytrade account per user at a time, and no paper trading through the API. Docs.
  • SignalStack: webhook-to-order routing, with tastytrade on its list of 32 brokers and exchanges. Brokers.
  • JorgAI: an AI auto-trader for stocks and ETFs that scans the session and places trades under limits you set, with no strategy to write. From $14.99 a month after a 7-day trial, no per-trade charges. Options and crypto are not traded through JorgAI on tastytrade. How the connection works.

The full tastytrade bots comparison goes deeper on each, and the options API comparison covers what the broker side supports for multi-leg orders.

How to choose

  • You trade options and want to automate rules you already have: Option Alpha, Whispertrades or OptionBots. The tastytrade deal tilts it toward Option Alpha or OptionBots if you keep $5,000 there; Whispertrades is the cheapest way to run one or two bots without a balance requirement.
  • Your signals already live in TradingView or TrendSpider: TradersPost or SignalStack, which turn alerts into orders. Budget for the charting subscription as well; our TradersPost cost comparison adds it up.
  • You write code: QuantConnect, or the Open API directly, which is free.
  • You want stocks and ETFs traded for you without writing a strategy: that is what JorgAI does. It does not trade options, so it is not a substitute for the first group.
  • You want an AI assistant, not a bot: tastytrade's own MCP server, where you confirm every order. Our October note on broker AI programs explains what it can and cannot do.

Whichever you pick, the checklist in our guide to connecting a bot safely applies: official OAuth only, no withdrawal permissions, and the risk limits set before anything trades live money.

Quick answers

Is Option Alpha owned by tastytrade?

No. Option Alpha's tastytrade promotion page describes the two as separate and unaffiliated companies. tastytrade's parent is IG Group, which acquired it in 2021. The integration is a broker partnership with a free-plan promotion attached.

Is Option Alpha free with tastytrade?

Yes, on the tastytrade plan: $0 a month with a qualifying tastytrade account, which the pricing page defines as a $5,000 minimum balance, and all live trading on that plan goes through tastytrade. Commissions still apply: $1 per options contract to open, capped at $10 per leg, and $0 to close.

Does tastytrade have its own trading bot?

No. tastytrade offers an Open API for developers and, since August 31, 2026, an open-source MCP server that connects an AI assistant to your account with a confirmation on every order. Strategy bots come from third parties such as Option Alpha, Whispertrades, OptionBots, TradersPost and JorgAI.

Can two bots trade the same tastytrade account?

tastytrade can authorize more than one third-party app on a login, but two bots sharing one account means each sees the other's positions and buying power, and some platforms limit it on their side; QuantConnect, for example, allows one tastytrade account per user at a time. The cleaner setup is one platform per account, with the accounts under the same tastytrade login, which the integrations support.

What does automated trading cost on tastytrade overall?

The software, from $0 (Option Alpha or OptionBots with a qualifying balance, or your own code on the API) to $299 a month (TradersPost Premium), plus tastytrade's commissions: $0 on stocks and ETFs, $1 per options contract to open.
