Does Schwab Have an AI Trading Bot? What Schwab Offers in 2026 (Intelligent Portfolios, Charley, the thinkorswim Assistant) and How Third-Party Automation Plugs In

Laptop on a desk showing financial index numbers, illustrating whether Schwab has an AI trading bot

No. Charles Schwab does not sell an AI trading bot. There is no Schwab product that watches the market and places stock trades in your account on its own, with or without AI, and on the third-quarter 2026 earnings call in October the CEO said the firm does not see itself "getting into the business of trying to create trading strategies on behalf of clients," calling it "a fool's errand." That is the whole answer to the question in the title. The rest of this page is what Schwab does offer, because the question usually comes from someone who wants one of four different things: an AI that explains their account, a portfolio that manages itself, orders that fire on a rule, or an outside program that trades the account for them. Schwab has a version of the first three and a door for the fourth.

What Schwab's AI actually does in 2026

  • Portfolio insights (May 5, 2026). Schwab's first generative-AI feature for retail clients writes a plain-language summary of what moved your portfolio, covering up to your five biggest-moving holdings and the market activity behind them. Schwab says it is "designed to provide information, not investment advice." It rolled out to all self-directed US retail clients by the end of May. It reads; it does not trade.
  • Charley (September 30, 2026). An AI assistant that answers questions and takes account actions: building watchlists, enrolling in dividend reinvestment, updating beneficiaries and contact details, setting alerts. The announcement lists no trading and no recommendations, and carries the line "Charley may provide inaccurate or incomplete results." Rollout began in October 2026 in phases.
  • A thinkorswim assistant (announced). On the October earnings call the CEO said Schwab is "rolling out an AI-powered thinkorswim assistant." No launch date, feature list or trading capability has been published.

Three AI features, none of which place a trade. That is consistent with how Schwab has described its position: the AI helps you understand and operate the account, and the decision to buy or sell stays with you or with software you chose to connect.

What Schwab automates without calling it AI

  • Schwab Intelligent Portfolios. The robo-advisor: a $5,000 minimum, no advisory fee and no commissions, a diversified ETF portfolio rebalanced for you, and tax-loss harvesting from $50,000. The thing to read before you sign is the cash allocation: a portion of every portfolio sits in FDIC-insured deposit accounts at Schwab Bank, and Schwab says it charges no advisory fee "in part because of the revenue Schwab Bank generates from the cash allocation." In 2022 the SEC ordered Schwab to pay $187 million over how that cash allocation had been disclosed; the allocation itself remains. Schwab automated investing explained goes deeper on it.
  • Intelligent Portfolios Premium is gone. The hybrid tier with a planner, $300 up front and $30 a month on a $25,000 minimum, was closed to new clients in December 2025 and wound down for existing clients in the first quarter of 2026. Some Schwab pages still mention it.
  • Schwab Personalized Indexing. A direct-indexing managed account from $100,000, at 0.40% a year on the first $2 million and 0.35% above. Managed, not AI.
  • Recurring investments. Scheduled buys of ETFs and mutual funds on a calendar. Automatic, but a calendar is not a rule about price.
  • Conditional orders in thinkorswim. The closest thing Schwab has to a rule that trades: an order that fires when a study condition is met, with one-cancels-other brackets. One order per rule, no re-arming after it fills, and thinkScript strategies stay hypothetical. What thinkorswim can automate covers the setup and the limits.

How third-party automation plugs into Schwab

Schwab's door for outside software is the Trader API, which replaced the TD Ameritrade API in May 2024. It has two tiers. Individual is for an app you write for your own self-directed account. Commercial is for a company whose software acts for other people's accounts; it registers with Schwab separately and that is the tier JorgAI connects through. In either case you authorize the app by logging in at Schwab, not by handing anyone a password, and the authorization has to be renewed every 7 days by logging in again. The Trader API explained lists what it covers and its limits; the ones that matter to a bot are whole shares only, no paper-trading sandbox and 120 requests a minute.

Schwab's stance on who may connect shifted into the open this autumn. On the same October call the CEO said the firm has "clients that are trading through LLMs and APIs," that it is "blocking unauthorized agents that try to log in on behalf of clients," and that it will let clients connect their AI models to Schwab's own MCP servers while controlling "the riskiest actions like moving money," starting with a pilot on Claude. At Schwab's IMPACT conference on October 30 the message was the same: "we are keeping rogue agents from being able to log in on the client's behalf." Read together: software that connects through the Trader API with your authorization is the supported path; an AI agent driving the Schwab website with your login is the path Schwab is actively closing.

One more gap worth knowing. Schwab Crypto launched on April 16, 2026 for Bitcoin and Ether, at 75 basis points a trade, with no external transfers and no API. There is no way to automate Schwab's crypto today; a crypto bot means an exchange account.

What a connected bot can and cannot do in a Schwab account

  • Can: read positions and balances, place and cancel stock, ETF and options orders, attach a stop and a target as a bracket that Schwab holds on its side, and read fills and transactions.
  • Cannot: move money in or out, trade fractional shares, trade Schwab's crypto, see or edit your thinkorswim studies and conditional orders, or keep running past the 7-day mark without you logging in again.
  • Measured: on 294 live automated orders at Schwab, signal to fill took a median of 1.0 seconds and market orders filled in the same second they were accepted; the fill-speed post has the distribution.

Where JorgAI fits

JorgAI is one of the outside programs. You keep the Schwab account where it is, log in at Schwab to authorize JorgAI on the Commercial tier, and set the rules: daily spend, position size, auto-trades per day, stop and trailing stop. It scans during the session on its own servers, places whole-share orders with the exit attached where Schwab accepts the bracket, and watches the exit itself where it does not. Every 7 days the Schwab login comes back, as it does for any software on the API. If you are comparing the options that actually connect to Schwab, the short list names them and the step-by-step shows the connection. If what you had in mind was a Claude or ChatGPT plan talking to Schwab, that route does not exist at Schwab yet, and the post explains what it costs and leaves out at the brokers where it does.

Quick answers

Does Charles Schwab have an AI trading bot?

No. Schwab's AI features in 2026 summarize your portfolio, answer questions and handle account tasks. None of them places trades, and the CEO said in October 2026 that Schwab will not build trading strategies for clients.

Does Schwab allow trading bots?

Yes, through the Schwab Trader API, which you authorize by logging in at Schwab and renew every 7 days. Schwab blocks AI agents that try to log in to the website on a client's behalf and is piloting its own controlled MCP connection.

Is Schwab Intelligent Portfolios an AI?

No. It is a rules-based robo-advisor that holds a diversified ETF portfolio, rebalances it and keeps a cash allocation at Schwab Bank. No advisory fee, $5,000 minimum, and the cash allocation is how Schwab is paid.

What is Charley at Schwab?

Schwab's AI assistant, announced September 30, 2026. It answers questions and performs account tasks such as watchlists, dividend reinvestment, alerts and contact updates. It does not trade or recommend.

Can I use ChatGPT or Claude to trade my Schwab account?

Not through any supported route today. Schwab publishes no MCP server for the public, blocks unauthorized agents, and is piloting a controlled connection that excludes moving money. Nine other US brokers do publish MCP servers.

Does Schwab Crypto have an API?

No. Schwab Crypto, launched April 16, 2026 for Bitcoin and Ether, has no external transfers and no API, so it cannot be automated.

Facts and quotes are from Schwab's press releases, product pages, its Q3 2026 earnings call and conference coverage, as of November 4, 2026; Schwab can change any of them. The order measurements are JorgAI's own and describe how the connection behaves, not trading results. Education, not financial advice.
