Kraken vs Crypto.com vs Alpaca for Automated Crypto Trading: Fees and Spreads Measured at the Same Moment

City skyline with a rising market chart overlay, cover for the Kraken, Crypto.com and Alpaca comparison

JorgAI now runs crypto rules on three venues: Alpaca, the Crypto.com Exchange and, as of this week, Kraken. Members ask which one to connect for crypto. The honest answer depends on where your coins already sit, but two costs can be measured rather than argued about: the trading fee each venue publishes and the bid-ask spread each one actually quotes. We measured both on the same day, at the same moment, on the same eight pairs.

This is a measurement, not a verdict. Fees change, spreads move through the day, and the venue you already use has a convenience value that no table captures. Here is what the three charge, what their order books looked like at one moment on a Sunday afternoon, what that adds up to on a round trip, and how the connections differ in practice. Education, not advice.

How the three connections differ

  • Alpaca: one account for stocks and crypto, connected with an API key and secret or Alpaca's sign-in. Dollar-sized orders on both. The only one of the three with a paper-trading environment. JorgAI's market data for every member also comes from Alpaca's feed.
  • Crypto.com Exchange: crypto only, connected with an API key that has Trading permission, Withdrawal off and JorgAI's address on its IP whitelist. Buy fees come out of the coin, so a tiny fraction is left unsellable after each round trip; the venue's API does not accept stop orders, so every exit is managed by JorgAI's monitors. Setup guide.
  • Kraken: crypto only, connected with an API key carrying the funds, orders and ledger permissions and no Withdraw. No IP allow-list. Buy fees come out of dollars, so the full bought amount is sellable. Kraken accepts stop orders, though JorgAI keeps the exits on its own monitors on every venue. Setup guide.

On all three, JorgAI's rules are identical: the same scans, confidence bar, position caps, stops, trailing stops, daily loss brake and buy approvals. Crypto-only venues snap the profile to Crypto Only and are not shown in the iOS app.

Published trading fees

All three charge maker and taker fees that fall with 30-day volume. These are the entry tiers, where most individual accounts sit, as published on each venue's fee page on October 18, 2026:

  • Alpaca: 0.15% maker, 0.25% taker below $100,000 of 30-day crypto volume, per Alpaca's crypto fee page.
  • Crypto.com Exchange: 0.25% maker, 0.50% taker below $10,000 of 30-day volume, per Crypto.com's fee schedule. Our October test fills paid 0.50% each way.
  • Kraken: 0.40% maker, 0.80% taker at tier 1 (any volume, no minimum assets on the platform), stepping down from $2,500 of 30-day volume, per Kraken's fee schedule. Our October test fills on a new account paid 0.80% each way: a $10 buy and a $10 sell cost $0.16 in fees between them.

JorgAI's entries and exits are mostly taker orders, so the taker column is the one that applies. On a $1,000 round trip at the entry tier that is $5 of fees on Alpaca, $10 on Crypto.com and $16 on Kraken before spread. How crypto fees compound shows why that difference matters across dozens of trades, and why Kraken's tiers, which drop quickly with volume, are worth checking against your own activity.

Spreads we measured at the same moment

Bar chart of the bid-ask spread in basis points on eight crypto pairs at Kraken, Crypto.com and Alpaca, sampled at the same moment on October 18, 2026; Kraken and Crypto.com under 4 basis points on every pair, Alpaca from 2 to 57

Method: on Sunday, October 18, 2026 at 2:09 PM Pacific we pulled the best bid and ask for eight USD pairs from Kraken's public ticker, Crypto.com's public ticker and Alpaca's crypto quote feed, five times each within the same ten seconds, and took the median spread as a share of the mid price, in basis points (one basis point is 0.01%). A single weekend sample is a snapshot, not a study.

  • Bitcoin and Ether were tight everywhere. BTC quoted 0.0 basis points on Kraken, 0.0 on Crypto.com and 2.1 on Alpaca; ETH 0.0, 0.0 and 2.4. At these levels the spread is a rounding error next to any of the fees.
  • The two exchanges matched each other on the smaller pairs; Alpaca was wider. SOL: Kraken 1.0, Crypto.com 1.0, Alpaca 9.9. DOGE: 0.7, 1.2, 34.0. XRP: 0.1, 0.8, 37.2. LINK: 2.7, 0.9, 22.4. AVAX: 3.2, 2.1, 56.1. LTC: 3.5, 3.5, 56.6.

A quoted spread is not a filled spread. The ticker shows the top of the book; a ten-dollar order fills there, a larger order walks deeper. And this is one sample on a quiet Sunday. The pattern it shows, two deep exchange books against a brokerage crypto feed, is the one we expected and the one our earlier Crypto.com versus Alpaca measurement also found on a Saturday morning.

Putting fee and spread together

Half the spread is paid on each side of a round trip, so a 30-basis-point spread costs about 0.15% per side, in the same units as the taker fee. On the majors the spread adds almost nothing at any venue, and the fee decides the cost: about 0.25% per side on Alpaca, 0.50% on Crypto.com, 0.80% on Kraken at the entry tier. On the smaller pairs Alpaca's spread adds roughly 0.1% to 0.3% per side on top of its fee, which narrows but does not close the gap to Crypto.com, and leaves Kraken the most expensive of the three at tier 1 until volume moves an account down its schedule.

Which fits which member

  • You already keep your crypto on Kraken and do not want to move it: connect Kraken. The fee is the price of staying put, and it falls as soon as your 30-day volume passes $2,500. Kraken guide.
  • You already keep your crypto on Crypto.com's Exchange: connect it. Remember the IP whitelist and the fee-in-coin quirk, both explained in the Crypto.com guide.
  • You want stocks and crypto in one account, want to paper trade first, or trade mostly BTC and ETH: Alpaca, where the fee is lowest and the majors' spreads are close to the exchanges'.
  • You trade small-cap pairs often: the two exchanges' deeper books matter more as your size and frequency grow; weigh their fee tiers against Alpaca's wider quotes for the pairs you actually trade.

Whichever you pick, the rules are the same and so is the safety model: a trade-only key or sign-in, no withdrawal access, money that stays at the venue. Is it safe to give a trading bot your exchange API key covers the permission model, and the brokers hub has all six connections side by side. Ready to run your rules on the venue you already use? Quick answers

Is Kraken or Crypto.com cheaper for automated crypto trading? At the entry tier Crypto.com's taker fee is 0.50% and Kraken's is 0.80%, with similar spreads on the pairs we measured. Kraken's fee falls from $2,500 of 30-day volume; Crypto.com's from $10,000. Check your own volume against both schedules.

Does Alpaca have wider crypto spreads than Kraken? On our October 18, 2026 sample, yes on the smaller pairs (for example about 10 basis points on SOL versus 1, and 34 on DOGE versus under 1), and about the same on BTC and ETH. Alpaca's taker fee (0.25%) is the lowest of the three.

Which venue should I connect to JorgAI for crypto? Usually the one that already holds your crypto. The rules, safety model and monitoring are identical on all three; the differences are fees, spreads on small pairs, and whether you also want stocks or paper trading in the same account (Alpaca).

Does JorgAI charge trading fees? No. JorgAI is a flat subscription; the venue's own fees apply to each fill.

Data: spreads sampled by JorgAI from the venues' public tickers and Alpaca's crypto quote feed on October 18, 2026 at 21:09 UTC (five samples per pair within ten seconds, median shown); fee tiers from each venue's published fee page the same day; fill fees from our own test orders in October 2026.
