Tesla reported third-quarter 2026 results after Wednesday's close: revenue of $28.05 billion, flat from a year ago and in line with estimates, adjusted earnings of $0.48 a share against $0.45 expected, and an automotive gross margin that recovered to 18.5%, while operating income fell 56% as spending on AI, Optimus and robotaxis grew faster than gross profit. The stock, which closed at $386.47, was up about 3% in the first half hour of extended trading. Thursday's regular session is where the reaction gets decided, so we measured what Tesla did the day after every one of its 42 quarterly reports since 2011, and one pattern stands out: the first day's direction has tended to keep going for a week. Education, not advice.

What Tesla reported

The figures below are from Tesla's third-quarter shareholder update, cross-checked against Electrek and CNBC.

  • Revenue $28.05 billion, flat year over year. Automotive revenue $20.56 billion, down 3%; energy generation and storage $2.88 billion, down 16%; services and other $4.61 billion, up 33%. Regulatory credit revenue fell 73% to $113 million.
  • Profit down, margin up. GAAP net income $787 million, or $0.22 a share, down 43%; non-GAAP earnings $0.48 a share, down 4% but ahead of the $0.45 consensus. Operating income $718 million, a 2.6% margin against 5.8% a year ago. Automotive gross margin 18.5%, or 18.1% excluding credits, up from 16.9% and 16.3% in the second quarter.
  • Spending. Operating expenses rose 39%, with research and development up 69% to $2.76 billion. Capital expenditure was $4.73 billion in the quarter and $13.0 billion for the year so far, against a stated plan of more than $25 billion for 2026. Free cash flow was $1.53 billion, down from $3.99 billion; cash and investments $45.4 billion.
  • Volume. Deliveries of 486,532, already known from the October 2 release, and 13.7 GWh of energy storage deployed. Tesla said it is focused on maximum factory utilization and gave no volume target; it put the FSD attach rate above 75% of North American deliveries, with 1.74 million active subscriptions.

The shape of the quarter is the one the deliveries beat set up three weeks ago: more cars, a better margin on each, and a profit line that AI spending is eating. The week-ahead guide has GM's and Netflix's results from Tuesday for comparison; Meta reported the same evening.

What Tesla stock did the day after every report since 2011

Bar chart of Tesla stock's next-day move after each of its 42 quarterly earnings reports from 2011 to July 2026, ranging from a 21.9 percent gain in October 2024 to a 14.5 percent loss in July 2026

We took every quarterly earnings report Tesla has filed since its first as a public company, 42 of them from February 2011 through July 2026, using the Form 8-K item 2.02 filing dates on SEC EDGAR, and matched each to the next session's open and close from Yahoo Finance. Tesla reports after the close, so the reaction day is the following session.

  • The stock rose the next day after 19 of 42 reports (45%). The median move, up or down, was 5.9%. It moved 10% or more 10 times and 5% or more 22 times. Biggest gain: +21.9% in October 2024. Biggest loss: -14.5% after the July 2026 report, the most recent one.
  • October has been the good month. Of 9 October reports, the stock rose after 7: 2016 +0.9%, 2018 +9.1%, 2019 +17.7%, 2020 +0.7%, 2021 +3.3%, 2022 -6.6%, 2023 -9.3%, 2024 +21.9%, 2025 +2.3%.
  • The last eight: Oct 24, 2024 +21.9%, Jan 30, 2025 +2.9%, Apr 23, 2025 +5.4%, Jul 24, 2025 -8.2%, Oct 23, 2025 +2.3%, Jan 29, 2026 -3.5%, Apr 23, 2026 -3.6%, Jul 23, 2026 -14.5%. Five of the eight were down, and the only big gain was October 2024.

Does the opening gap hold?

Tesla gaps at the open after a report; the median gap, up or down, is 5.2%. The question for anyone holding through the report is whether the open is the high or low of the day. Across the 42 reports the gap extended in the direction it opened 22 times and faded 20 times: a coin flip. From the open to the close the median was -1.9%, which means the stock has more often given back part of the gap during the day than added to it. For the 22 gaps of 5% or more, 13 extended and 9 faded.

The practical reading: a 4% gap up at Thursday's open has not reliably become 6% by the close, and a gap down has not reliably become worse. Selling into the open or buying the dip at the open have both been roughly even bets on this record.

The part that is not a coin flip: the week after

Measured from the pre-report close, the median move one week after a Tesla report is -3.1% and the stock was higher only 40% of the time; a month later the median is -1.1%. The average hides the useful split. After the 19 reports where the stock rose on day one, the median one week later was +13.0% from the pre-report close, and it was still higher 74% of the time. After the 23 reports where it fell on day one, the median a week later was -7.2%, and it was higher only 13% of the time.

That is the strongest pattern in the whole record: the first day's direction has persisted through the first week far more often than it reversed. It is not a trading rule, because 42 reports is a small sample and the two biggest October gains sit inside the up group, but it is the reason the first regular-session close, not the after-hours print, is the number to watch on Thursday.

How to hold or trade Tesla on Thursday

  • Size for a 6% day. That is the median; one report in four moved 10% or more. If a 10% gap against you would be the biggest loss in your account this year, the position is too big tonight. Position sizing is the control that works before the open.
  • Do not treat the extended-hours print as the move. The after-hours session is thin and the gap at 9:30 is routinely different from the 4:30 PM reaction. The record above is measured on the regular session for that reason.
  • A stop does not protect you across the gap. The stock reopens where the report puts it and a stop fills there. The earnings-season guide covers the gap problem. If you need protection, it has to come from size, not from a stop set at Wednesday's close.
  • Decide the four outcomes before the open. Gap up and extend, gap up and fade, gap down and extend, gap down and fade. The record says each pair is close to even on day one, and that the day-one direction tends to persist for a week. A plan written tonight beats one improvised at 9:31.

JorgAI exists for mornings like Thursday's: the position cap, the stop, the profit target and the daily loss brake are set once and enforced inside your own brokerage account while the gap prints. Set your rules tonight rather than at the open.
